Sun Salutations For thousands of years people have been waking at dawn to honor the sun. Surya Namaskar, or prostrations to the sun consists of a series of poses strung together in a vinyasa flow style. The body is a temple that houses the infinite intelligence within, our consciousness. This practice is a moving prayer that strengthens our body while honoring and showing gratitude to the sun, without which there would be no life upon Earth. Performing the practice of Surya Namaskar can bring one into harmony with the cycles and rhythms of nature. In this practice we will chant the sanskrit mantras that accompany the 12 positions that honor the different avatars of the sun throughout the entire practice. Each avatar brings in a different vibration of conscious energy within us. Each position throughout the sequence aligns us with those divine energies. This practice is spiritual and peaceful. The repetitive mantra chanting while flowing through the movements initiates a very deep meditative state. The pace is very slow and gentle.
Kundalini Yoga Kundalini, the Yoga of Awareness. In this practice the goal is to awaken life force energy at the base of the spine. This practice is very spiritual and focuses on breath and movement to build mental, emotional and physical endurance. We will explore traditional yoga postures and strength exercises while using the breath to move energy. Kundalini sequences known as kriyas vary in speed and duration. This style of yoga has great power for releasing and letting go, for discharging blockages and leading to immense joy and prolonged states of serenity. Kundalini is quite different than most vinyasa practices and other forms of yoga. In addition to intense repetitive deep breath work, you may find yourself stomping, dancing or chanting. We also use mudras, hand positions and drishti, eye gaze direction. Traditionally it is best to wear white to a kundalini class, but please do not feel obligated to do so. The color white is said to expand auric fields, protect from negative projections and deflect negativity. White inspires grace and heightens awareness. According to Yogi Bhajan, one can absorb just the frequencies needed from wearing white because white light contains the whole spectrum of color.
