Supplements and Dietary Recommendations
Take fish oil everyday either in liquid or capsule form. Fish oil contains DHA, which is easily absorbed by the body and is an essential nutrient for brain health. Research shows that Gingko biloba extract is supportive to the brain because it increases efficiency of the brain, increases circulation to the brain, and improves transmission of nerve impulses. Take 120 to 240mg daily taken in 2 to 3 doses. Effects may take 6 to 12 weeks.
The brain uses fat for food. DHA is the most abundant fat in the brain and is necessary for electrical communication between neurons. As we age, the amount of DHA in the brain decreases. DHA is most abundant in fish as well as free-range beef, chickens, and eggs.
Cook with coconut oil or even butter or ghee. Increase your use of olive oil on salads and other dishes. Olive oil should not be cooked with as it alters the structure of the fat. Coconut oil and butter has a more sturdy structure and can be subjected to higher heat. In addition, coconut oil is a valuable source of fuel for the brain. Stay away from trans fatty acids. They interfere with proper brain functioning. Trans fatty acids include vegetable oils and corn oils found in many processed products and fried foods.
Nuts and avocados are also wonderful food for the brain. Include almonds, walnuts, macademia, and hazelnuts. Also, increase your consumption of berries. Red and blue colored berries like cherries, strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries. Blueberries, in particular, have been shown to clear out accumulation of toxic proteins in the brain. They are also antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, and increase circulation to the brain. 1/4 cup per day is ideal. I buy frozen berries and put them in smoothies or oatmeal or sprinkle them on salads, or even eat them as a desert with a little organic cream. Green tea, red wine, dark sugar free berry juices, and dark chocolate (more than 70% cocoa) are also beneficial because of their antioxidant properties.
The herbs mentioned above are all available at Sol or Health food stores.
